CD Review - Batusis - Batusis EP
Posted on: Sun , May 23 10:09 AM

Ok this arrived Via MR Oi Oi Vincey Boy at Studs and Punks with a Full Press Bio and packaged in a nice little cardboard sleeve, I glanced briefly at the Bio, But was put off by the PUNK ROCK SUPERGROUP Headline, we shall see?

Ok first track is an instrumental BLUES THEME drums lead the way followed by squeaky feedback, revving motorcycles and then were off into a nice little ‘bluesy’ rock riff a repeated guitar lick gets under your skin and all is pleasant enough, But about halfway through its just not going any further and its repetitive nature just starts to get tired for me at 4 minutes 22 seconds its just too long, fine if you are doing something else and its on in the background but for me just not doing it.

Batusis

Track 2 is WHAT YOU LACK IN BRAINS this track slaps straight in and Syl Sylvain’s Scream makes me relax as I realise this track has vocals Hurray!! Ok this is a real old school Bluesy, rock rattling flip-flop fly with Honky tonk piano and great New York dolls style lyrics (No surprise there) I like this track its catchy upbeat and has you joining in, the mix is really nice too nice tight pounding drums, prominent bass, those sleazy rocky guitars and of course Syl’s vocal, verdict good little rocker.

Track 3 BURY YOU ALIVE this one thuds straight in and has a very different feel to it more rock and less sleaze, this shows a different edge to Batusis and when the vocals kick in you realise why, this is sung by Cheetah Chrome rather than Syl Sylvain and his deeper more moody vocal adds a dark, sinister, depth to the band I like the idea of using two vocals to alter the mood and feel (I would like to hear a song where they split the vocal duties Now..)

Batusis

This track took longer to grow on me but now after a few listens I prefer this one to Track 2 its dirtier and nearer to my love PUNK ROCK, this is still a rock track but it has attitude and a Dark veil that makes you growl deep in your gut and makes me wanna here more of Batusis

Last offering here is BIG CAT STOMP this track seems to carry on where Bury you alive left off, grinding Bopping rock riff laden mooch along, again this is another instrumental and although this is better than the first instrumental as it has more detail, the guitars are dirtier and more active, it is a rock solo made into a track and for me by halfway again I have had enough, this one is shorter so it ends before I have to halt it though.

Ok so there it is 4 tracks from a New band made up of members of Old bands, the drums and bass are a tight knit unit and there skill and stability just keep it all together its funny when I was first listening I thought there was a real Joan Jett and the Blackhearts feel and sound to it and when I looked through the press release as I write this to try and find out who they are? I find it says Enzo Penizzotto (Bass) and Thommy Price (drums) the driving rhythm section behind yea you guessed it Joan Jett and the Blackhearts haha now you could say I just read that and wrote it too be clever but I didn’t and when you hear this you will hear what I mean.

Punk rock supergroup?…No this is rocky bluesy sleaze edged music its safe and its very Old school But its not Punk rock.

Batusis

Is it any good? Well my opinion is this if you listen to it as a PUNK Cd then No its not that good, its too safe and too comfortable for that,  But if you listen to it as a rock collaboration between 4 seasoned musicians who have been an influence on many then Yes it’s a Good beginning of a very interesting collaboration, and for me personally I think 2 instrumentals on a 4 track debut Cd is not really a good way to showcase the band, but that’s just me I suggest you get a copy of the CD and let me know what you think? (Take up today challenge)

Stand out track for me by far is BURY YOU ALIVE

Till next time -
