CD Review - Leather Zoo - Naked Feedback
Posted on: Fri , Sep 03 01:55 PM

Fleur de Lys Jangley guitar leads the way into a chugging rocky little tune reminiscent of 80s Rock Pop

Great vocal and a catchy melody makes for a great opening track full of pomp and promise and a stand up heart felt feeling of Joy very enjoyable and well produced

George and the Dragon Whore is next a very different style here a skiffly flip flop drum shuffle leads you through a medieval, folky story book tune of woe enjoyable again Not a classic but I am certain with ale in hand we would be dancing to this across the land at any festival

Stranger well you certainly cant say this bands songs all sound the same as this track is yet another change a haunting slow ballad of acoustic stripped back nakedness…well till the rest of the song crashes in a good rocky little number slams along great guitar riffs intertwine and makes for a real head shaking rock number again the vibrated edge to the vocal is nice and even the guitar solos are short enough not to annoy me

Leather Zoo

Release Me ok this is a bit more punky song with a quirky edge to the vocal reminds me sort of Adam and the ants meets bowwowwow meets Lene Lovich really like this one it’s the best one yet in my opinion

Serial Killer so halfway through now and this is next track is a slower paced jagger jagger style rock track very pleasant and speaking of which never heard “raped in the ass” sung so pleasantly haha, this is not for me I have tried and tried but just not keen on this song

Charlie Feedback and 1234 intro is likely to lead to something half decent and yes it’s a missing track from rocky horror picture show a schlock and roll number that has you twisting like a twat, got a real 77 feel to the music hear and the tight quality musicianship very obvious in this, love it

Fairy Punk Princess The intro reminds me of sweet/marc Bolan and this leads into an old school punk track with a real Undertones feel you cant say this band don’t mix it up love the Bah bah bah bah bahs haha I defy you not to join in with those, another Good one this were on a roll now

88 Kids again a rocky number with a much more modern feel to it than some of the others some excellent drumming in this one some real impressive double speed rolls it’s a drift along this one it never really explodes just goes along and that’s the beauty of it the first listen I was gonna put it in the ok camp but after a couple more it became very enjoyable, you listen see what you think

Belliss Coldwine Another good little rocky track not sure about the almost childvoice backing vocal but other than that it’s a decent little song and nice to see the sound wave machine making it into a song, Bill Bailey will be pleased

Leather Zoo

Cold War Warrior is the last track on the CD and it’s a slower paced rock style track with lots of stop start musicianship of a very high stand and the drifty echoey vocal all leads nicely to the chorus, which has a lovely rhythm I really like, what follows is a bit super group prog rocky type of riff, luckily its only a few seconds but not for me, other than that I like this one it’s an interesting way to end the Cd another level another edge for them

So that’s it some tracks I like, some not so much it’s a great well produced CD and the band have obviously put a lot of time and work into the songs, but for me it’s a bit too 80s Heart mixed with Folky rock I will keep it in my collection as like all these things there are tracks I love and will be listening to again and again, I will be looking forward to hearing what comes next as from this CD its difficult to know, but I will definantly be getting a copy to find out

CD Review - Mispelt 2.0 - National Insecurity
Posted on: Mon , Aug 30 01:51 PM
Next in line for dissection under the studded scalpel, is the 4 track pre-release from another Bloody nice bunch, and winners of Mooseman's 2009 best live performance, Mispelt 2.0

It would be unfair to comment on presentation as being a pre-release, the copy I have is very DIY with a handmade photocopied cover surrounding a self burned cd scrawled with a marker, so whilst I understand this will be pushed as a digital release, there will also be an official release and the artwork on this review is the proposed design.

Mispelt 2.0

The cd consist of four tracks with a bonus two tracks here for this review, and having ranted about "short punchy punk-perfection" that is Foxtrot Oscar, one of the best tracks I’ve heard on the Spit & Sawdust cd, I have been looking forward to hearing more from this Midlands crew.

“Got in a spot of bother – the other Saturday night” and Gens lively full on vocals fire straight in with this catchy upbeat Something for the Weekend. With a neat midway slow-down, this is exactly what I expected, a raw punk sound with a solid drum and bass line support to Gens strong vox. This track rings in your head for hours afterwards and would be a great live sing-along – rating 7/10

Special Brew and Methadone – straight in at 2 with a strong metal sounding intro and a little heavier this time, but again catchy with some nice backing vocals throughout, and loving the stop half way leaving you expecting a wind down when it fires straight back in. All looking good so far, and full of energy - rating 7/10

Armed Response starts of with a guitar solo, before cutting into a strong rhythm, and for me this is the best track so far, and again a catchy chorus, I’m liking these guys as they are again something different to anything out there some Dunk intervention on the vocals on this one, which like Foxtrot Oscar works well – rating 7.5/10

National Insecurity – and Dunk Thumps a bass riff at the start of this title track before again sharing the vocals on this one. Mispelt seem to follow a pretty simple set-in-stone formula of a strong hard sound, a catchy sing-along chorus, dunk and Gen bouncing vocals back and forth, a little variety mid-way all put into the blender to give you a supper to feast on - it don't take Einstein to see that this formula works – rating 7/10

Bonus Tracks Junkfood Generation is one of the few tracks I had heard prior to this release, and rightly so is recognised as one of the bands best tracks to date – a great rhythm to this one and again this Jen/Dunk combo works for me – rating 7.5/10 Friends Like You again a bass riff to get this underway and AGAIN a bloody catchy rhythm and chorus – what a way to end, even better than Armed Response and on-par with the legendary Foxtrot Oscar – rating 8.5/10

Mispelt have a wealth of experience gained over the many years and seem to have settled with the current line-up. The band are hugely respected in the underdog community, doing this for the right reasons and loving every minute of it – Definitely a band that Studs and Punks will continue to support – and I urge you to do the same.

CD Review - Who Shot Who? - Onwards and Upwards
Posted on: Fri , Aug 27 07:09 PM

A drum roll leads you into the first track A CALL TO ARMS an old school punk sounding tune with a spoken/sung vocal very different to what you might expect, it has a big audio dynamite feel for me but more punk catchy guitar licks and chanty back vocals make this a great first impression even the Queenesque rock ballad guitar solo at the end adds a nice touch I like this song

Next is NO TREATY NO MERCY drum machine!!!! Haha there’s something you don’t hear on a punk cd too often soon gone though similar to the first song but with a lovely rumbling bass line on the verse and a great guitar lick here and there catchy chanty licks are rapped/spoken over the top and again a rock ballad solo throws in yet another image this is a far superior song to the last very well crafted, time and effort has been thrown into the mix to create a collage of vision and sound Love it

Who Shot Who

THE MURDER OF A GOOD MAN oozes the fall sound in my mind it’s again a plethora of textures and images and has been crafted well by a group of Good musicians not as good a track as the last for me but still a catchy little bugger

BOMBPROOF the verse is simple and understated its rising riff and spoken lyric is a lead up to the very catchy chorus with is underlying guitar lick it gets in ya head and it keeps coming back, it keeps coming back…

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT oh this starts so 77 style and then drops into a skank edged riff lyrics spoken with a skill reminiscent of Ian Dury I am not as keen on the chorus it seems a little bit of a let down after the verse which like previous songs has been well constructed, shame the verse is good but this one is not for me

HOOLIGAN HANDBOOK the very basic old school sound of this track will give anyone over 30 a soft squidgy look back and memories of garages and shed bands formed will drift back a simple basic but good little track I think this band may be lost on some people as they don’t follow “the rules” haha the amount of arguments I have about that THERE ARE NO FUCKIN RULES THIS IS PUNK FUCKING ROCK!!

Who Shot Who

IM NOT HAPPY is track seven and a angsty little ditty it is with some great lyrical lines wretched forth and backed again by an eclectic sound that somehow blends together haha the creative juice is spewing from the punk rock veins

HAVE YOU SEEN ANNETTE? A rock guitar lick distracts us and shockingly leads us into Who shot whos sound the spoken word, the jangley guitar, pounding drums, hard tight bass with a guitar riff following the vocal on the chorus this is good, as a track its not the best but its Good and it gets caught in ya brain

EVERYTHING Bass leads the way old school punk with a fairground magic roundabout chorus another string to the bow and its simple basic uncluttered form is soothing the scratching in the break even is great to hear

RED MIST Jazzzzzzzzzzzzz shuffling off beat feel to the intro leads to a track in similar vein as the others but I gotta say I don’t like this one the chorus lacks and the breakdown Nah this ones not for me I shall move on

Who Shot Who

WHAT DID I TELL YOU? Hoy!! Russian/Arabian feel here “my blunderbus is wonderous” haha great line love the backing vocal simple and haunting back on it lads this makes up for the last track Good stuff

NEANDERTHAL last offering here is not for me not a good way to end, I don’t like this one its got all the markings of  a Who shot who track but it’s a deformed bastard tribute band that don’t quite get it impersonating them and for me is not the End I was looking for.

This Cd is a breath of New air it’s a group of musicians experimenting and its Great to hear, its brave and its on the whole a great success, I like it! I am uncertain about the next step as I wonder where Now? Only you can answer that Boys? I hope that the songs I don’t really like were early ideas and not the signs of idea wasteland, which would be a shame because the songs that shine Really shine and I am really looking forward to seeing the guys in the live arena.

So for what its worth my advice is check this band out they are trying something different and its worthy of inclusion in your collection, but if you are looking for Punk101 then my advice is buy a beige suit get a job in a Craft emporium and never darken punks door again
